August G. Shelbrack

Cross Plains - August G. “Jack” Shelbrack, age 89, passed away on May 8, 2025 at Agrace Hospice. He was born on March 24, 1936 in the Town of Texas, Marathon Co., WI on the Ostrowski homestead. Jack was the 1st born of seven children to the late Clem and Clara (Ostrowski) Shelbrack.

Jack met his wife, Shirley Ann Leonard, while working at Weltman’s Grocery Store in Wausau, WI and they were married on Oct. 19, 1957 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Wausau after he served time in the Marines. They relocated to Cross Plains where they raised their 8 children.

Jack was a Master Plumber by trade but a true outdoorsman known as “Trapper Jack.” He loved spending time outdoors while hunting, fishing, trapping, berry picking, and Morel mushroom hunting. Jack also enjoyed baking and spending his days at “The Pond” which he deemed a little piece of heaven on earth.

He is survived by his children: Susan Du Charme, David (Patty) Shelbrack, Cindy Marty, Cathy (John, deceased) Wittenwyler, Brenda (Bill) Pulvermacher, John (Christine) Shelbrack, Becky Shelbrack, and LuAnn (Dan Miller) Shelbrack; Grandchildren, Step-Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Great Step-Grandchildren; three brothers: Clem Jr., Clarence, and Richard; two sisters: Jayne Steiner and Bonnie Crochiere, brother-in-law Frank Leonard, and nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, Shirley of 66 years, Jack was preceded in death by his sons-in-law, Chuck Du Charme and John Wittenwyler, sister Carol Jean Toftum, cousin and best buddy, Nick Zoborowski, and other family members.

Special thanks to dad’s caregiver Gay and Agrace hospice nurse Brittany for the exceptional care they provided and kindness shown and to the many people mom and dad met throughout the years who became lifelong friends. Also, mom and dad couldn’t have asked for better neighbors than: Kim and Millie, and Lisa and Jeff.

Memorials may be made to the Wisconsin Badger Honor Flight.

A private family funeral will be held.
