Harold August Meier

Harold August Meier 86, of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at Unity Point Meriter hospital in Madison, Wisconsin surrounded by family.

A proud graduate of New Glarus High School in 1959, Harold pursued his passion for art through higher education. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Painting from Southern Illinois University and a Master's degree in Printmaking from Northern Illinois University. His artistic talents flourished throughout his life, and he continued creating well into his seventies, sharing his work generosity with friends, family and the community. Harold's grandchildren carry forward his creative legacy.

Following high school Harold served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, embodying discipline and commitment that defined his character. A devoted husband, family, and grandfather, Harold treasured time spent with husband wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed camping, family adventures, and working on household projects while lending a hand to others. His resourcefulness and ability to fix anything were invaluable to those around him.

Harold's dedication extended beyond his family to his community. A longtime member of Saint Albert the Great Church, he volunteered for their RCIA program and contributed to decorating the church. He also served as President of the Prairie Homes Association Board, playing an active role in maintaining neighborhood amenities. One of Harold's proudest contributions was supporting his children during their years with the Sound of Sun Prairie matching Band, where he assisted with loading and unloading equipment, chaperoning trips, and documenting performances.

Harold is survived by his son Craig; daughter Christina; grandchildren Katherin (Kyle); Megan, and Ryen, siblings Herbert Meier (Barb), Marilyn O'Brien and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Sharon Meier, his parents August and Selma Meier, sister Martha Albertson, brother Carl (Denise) Meier and step-brother Warren (Rey) Meier.

Harold will be remembered as a kind-hearted, funny man who selflessly gave to others while nurturing a deep love for art and family. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in August. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations be made to the Dementia Society of America or the Alzheimer's Association .
