John Edward Phillips Senior, “Ed” of Middleton, Wisconsin, age 92, passed away at Agrace Hospice on 9/14/23. He was born on April first of 1931 on a farm nestled in the hills of Walton, West Virginia. The son of Ferman Elton Phillips and Cora Della Daughtery, he had four siblings - Iris, George, Jean, and Helen. He married four times- Mildred Gabrielson, Martha Greene, Hannah Sands, and Lillian Redding. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Morris Harvey College, a Master’s degree in theology at Naperville United Brethern Seminary, and a Master’s degree in social work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His occupations varied – working as a chemist, being a Methodist Minister, and being a social worker. He also enjoyed many hobbies – carpentry, gadget lover, gardener, handyman, watch repair, genealogy and was a jack of all trades.
He was thankful for Middleton Glen, Heritage Senior Living, Agrace Hospice, and his care team - Jeri Dobson, Penny Seaberg, David Comello, and Francie Corry. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Ruth (Mike) Mary (Tim), John, Tom (Nancy) and Cora (Allen). He also left behind ten grandchildren – Bob, Anne, Katie, Michael, Nicholas, Emily, Abby, Henry, Ethan, Helen, Thomas, Desmond, and Nash. Great grandchildren - Cole, Harper, Hunter, James, Peter and Mathias. He is also survived by his sister Helen Mercer, and Lil’s grandson, Eric Redding. He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings - Iris, George and Jean, and his wife Lillian Redding. Ed found great enjoyment in photographing the natural world and people in his life. He then shared books of these pictures widely. Ed wants to be remembered as a person who loved and lived fully, cared for the natural world, and shared his gifts and abilities with others.
