Larry Allen Sargent peacefully passed away on March 30, 2026, at the VA Hospice Unit in Madison, WI with his family by his side.
Larry was born to Lawrence and Marian Sargent on August 5, 1950, in Stoughton, WI. He graduated from Deerfield High School in 1968 before attending MATC, Madison.
He joined the United States Navy two years later. He proudly served his country from 1970-1974. During his service he was stationed on the USS America, an aircraft carrier off the coast of Vietnam. After leaving the navy, Larry joined the Cambridge-Deerfield VFW. He attended monthly meetings, participated in Memorial Day celebrations and served in the honor guard.
Besides the navy, Larry worked at various places including Rowe Pottery and retired from Nasco, Fort Atkinson in 1971.
Larry spent much of his time with family and friends. He had a love of music, especially classic rock. In his late teens he played guitar and won a talent show with his friend Mark. He was an avid gardener, spending much of his spring and summer tending to flowers and vegetables. Sundays meant a trip to the flea market, where he enjoyed looking for treasures. He also enjoyed a weekly thrifting trip and lunch with his brother, treating each outing as its own adventure.
Larry is survived by his brother Dan Sargent (Karen), sister Nancy Dorshorst (Marv), nephews Cole Sargent (Jenna), Trent Sargent, Evan Dorshorst and niece Emily Dorshorst (Robert). He was fondly called “Uncle Cheeto” by his great nephews Carson and Riley Sargent and great niece Jocee. Larry also is further survived by his loyal cat and friend Omar.
He was preceded in death by his parents Larwrence and Marian Sargent.
The family would like to thank the staff at both the UW Hospital and the VA both in Madison for their attentive and compassionate care. A special thanks to Pastors Holly Slater and Jen Kuhnert for their visits throughout Larry’s illness. They provided much comfort and peace to Larry and his family. A final thanks to Larry’s neighbors who maintained Larry’s home while he was hospitalized, giving him peace of mind.
A memorial celebration will be held at the St. Paul’s Liberty Lutheran Educational Center 3494 Oak Park Road Deerfield, WI. on Friday May 1, 2026. A luncheon and sharing of memories will begin at 11 am with a service to follow at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to either St. Paul’s Liberty Lutheran Church or Deerfield Lutheran Church in Larry’s memory.
