September 28, 1928 — December 15, 2022

Lockert, Mary Catherine
Madison, WI

Mary Catherine Lockert (Cooney) died peacefully at Agrace Hospice (Fitchburg) on December 15, 2022 at the age of 94 surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Watertown, SD the third of seven children on September 28, 1928 to James and Margaret Cooney.

Mary's first love was to her family and she cared for her family with a strong will and never ending energy. She was a proud Irishwoman, opinionated and not afraid to speak her mind. Mary was an optimist whose motto was "Just Do It." She enjoyed baking, canning, candy making, flower-gardening and the game of Bridge. She will be remembered for her charity and wry sense of humor.

While attending St. Mary's School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN, she met the love of her life, the charismatic Norman Lockert - but before settling down, she worked in a San Francisco hospital for a year so she could experience and enjoy a wider world and big city life. Norm persuaded her to come back to Minnesota where they married and raised a family of seven. They were married for 52 years. She worked in health care for many years and retired from the American Red Cross where she made lasting friendships. Upon retirement, she enjoyed traveling to visit her family and friends, baking cookies, and making peanut brittle.

Mary is survived by six of her seven children; Jon (Marilyn Scarborough) of Fruita, CO, Steve of Arlington, WA, Bob (Cindy Settlemyre) of Glen Allen, AK, Susan (Paul Kienitz) of Belleville, WI, Mary Ann (Pat Culligan) of Edgerton, WI, and Kathy (Chuck Fick) of Newbury Park, CA. She had six grandchildren: Richard, Katy, Kimberly, Chuck, Christian, and Otto. She had seven great grandchildren: Bryson, Braylon, Adrianna, Derek, Rosemary, Sage, and Hayden. Her sister, Irene Stellon (ND) and brother Terry (Red) Cooney (AK) are the last of immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband Norman (2002) and her son James of Trapper Creek, AK (2020).

Mary lived at All Saints Assisted Living for four plus years. We thank everyone who helped Mary live a long and prosperous life.
