Stephen Sylvester Udvari

November 18, 1922 — July 4, 2012

Cogito Ergo Sum - "I think therefore I am". This original lithograph and message embodies the life and philosophy of Stephen S. Udvari. After a heroic and rich life, Stephen died at the age of 89 on July 4th, 2012 with the regalia and sparks that were due to him.

He was a brilliant, creative, enlightened human being who always put family first. He had a gift to teach & influence everyone in his path.
As his children, we were so blessed to be nurtured and loved by such an extraordinary spirit.

After serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, Steve received a BS Degree from Indiana University of Penn. & Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University, NY.

He pursued art as a profession as well as a form of expression. In his own words, he reflects: "To me, it was art that most clearly objectified my thoughts and feelings in a way that words could not."

After 34 years in education, teaching at all levels, acting as an administrator, & being part of federal initiatives to advance & innovate educational opportunities, Steve retired. He unpacked his paints and brushes, returning to his center, he painted prolifically in the 1980s and 1990's.

Steve is survived by his wife, Mary Beth Udvari of Madison, his son Stephen, (Joseph and Katherine) of Woodbury, Mn; his daughters Ilona (Joe Veith, Karlyn) of Menomonie, and Alice (Mark Udvari-Solner, Madeline, and Haven) of Madison.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established in Steve's memory to purchase a bench to be placed in the park in front of his house. Memorials can be made to: "Alice Udvari-Solner for the benefit of Stephen Udvari Memorial Fund". Please forward to Informed Choice on the families behalf.
