Vishnu Sahai Mathur

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vishnu Sahai Mathur on June 26th, 2024. Born in Asansol, India in 1933, Vishnu was the eldest son of 6 children. He was a brilliant student who won many awards for his academic achievements, including earning a PhD in particle physics from Delhi University. He journeyed to the US for the first time by ship in 1958 to pursue a post-doctoral fellowship at the Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago, and then returned to Delhi in 1961 to marry Kusum Mathur (1940-1996). They moved to the US in 1965 for a 1-year visiting professorship at the University of Rochester, a tenure which extended into a distinguished 38-year career at the institution. Beyond physics, Vishnu loved Indian classical music, a passion that he shared with Kusum. He was an accomplished tabla player, owned the most extensive collection of classical music, and over the years, hosted countless professional musicians from India at his home. Vishnu also relished gourmet food and would regularly invite friends for delicious barbecues in his beautiful backyard. Along his life journey, he and Kusum had three girls, Sharmila, Dipika, and Mala, who all adored him. He was a proud ‘Nanaji’ to 10 beautiful grandchildren and would often amuse them with hilarious stories from his youth and travels around the globe. Vishnu was an engaging conversationalist and master teacher, often coming to the dinner table to discuss the latest sightings from the James Webb telescope or new discoveries about black holes and dark matter. He could explain anything, no matter the complexity. He was also a role model with his disciplined lifestyle and ability to solve any problem. Above all, Vishnu was a kind and generous soul, who made everyone feel like family. He was beloved by all. His passing reunites him with Kusum, the love of his life. Vishnu is survived by Sharmila Fowler and her children Nikhil, Milan, Keya, and Brij; Dipika and Marcus Matthias and their children Hena, Kiran, and Sana; and Mala and Sameer Mathur and their children Priya, Anjali, and Sanjay. We will all miss him dearly but know that his spirit lives on within us. A memorial service will be held at the Hindu Temple of Rochester, 120 Pinnacle Road, Pittsford, NY 14534 on August 31st from 2:30-4:30pm. To continue Vishnu’s musical legacy, memorial donations may be made to ICC Rochester, Music Programs, PO Box 800, Pittsford, NY 14534-0800 or https://iccrochester.org/donate in memory of Vishnu Mathur.
