MADISON - Winifred Roberts Erwin, née Shepard, age 94, died Tuesday, October 6th, 2015 in Madison, Wisconsin. She was born on Valentine's Day in 1921, the third daughter of Charles Nelson Shepard and Harriet Roberts Shepard in Madison. She graduated from Madison West High School and received her BA and MA from the University of Wisconsin.
Winifred met her husband, Dr. Charles R. Erwin in Chicago where she worked as a Textile Designer and married him on November 11, 1944. They had three children, and lived primarily in Florida and Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Dr. Erwin was a Public Health Physician for 31 years. He preceded her in death in 1995. Winifred worked as an art teacher in Reedsburg, Wisconsin and Milwaukee. She engaged in the joy of artwork, camping and canoeing and along with her husband was an avid rosarian.
Winifred leaves behind three children, Harriet (William) Spira of Madison, Linda (Gary) Johnson of Waunakee, and Charles (Deniece) Erwin of Hico, Texas. Winifred is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Lisl Wilson of Broomfield, Colorado, Gary Johnson of Longmont, Colorado, Kirsten Spira (Todd Tannenbaum) of Madison, Wisconsin and Matt (Tania) Spira of Madison, Wisconsin, Seth (Sharon) Johnson of Cross Plains, Wisconsin, Erik Johnson of Grafton, Wisconsin, Zachary (Sadina) Erwin of Conroe, Texas, Adrianne Erwin of Garland, Texas and 12 great-grandchildren.
Winifred will be buried at Resurrection Cemetery in Mequon, Wisconsin in a private interment. The family is grateful for the warm, exceptional care of the staff at The Willows Nursing Home in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
